Importance of a Good Dental Routine

Dr. Hye Park, DMD

Setting goals is a great way to motivate you to do something. However, simply setting goals does nothing to actually achieve your goals – you have to work for them. A routine is a plan that helps you do the ins and outs necessary to reach your goals. Routines do not need to be complicated; in fact, a simple routine is one that is easy to follow and typically produces the best results because it is one that you will actually carry out. Many people neglect to find the importance of a good dental routine until it is too late. Yet, taking proper care of your oral health will prevent cavities, decay, gum disease, and tooth loss – all of which are the result of not implementing a good dental routine.

Here are steps for a simple dental routine that you can easily implement:

  • Floss daily. Dental floss is the most underutilized tool for oral health, yet it is the most important tool. Dental floss is specifically designed to clean the tight spaces between the teeth that no other tool can reach. If you are simply brushing your teeth, you are leaving the area between the teeth and your gum line constantly dirty and covered in bacteria-laden plaque. This is main cause of gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing is important! Brushing the teeth removes plaque and food particles from the surfaces of the teeth. It is essential to use a fluoride tooth paste to protect against cavities and decay.
  • Rinse your toothbrush well. It is critical that you do not neglect your toothbrush in your dental routine. Bacteria become trapped in the bristles of your toothbrush each time you use it, so rinsing it under fast, running water is necessary to wash them away. Storing your toothbrush in an upright position will also allow it to dry quickly, eliminating an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive.
  • Replace your toothbrush often. Even with proper rinsing, your toothbrush will begin to harbor bacteria over time. It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush every 3-6 months.
  • Visit the dentist regularly. While what you do at home is essential to your oral health, visiting the dentist regularly for a professional cleaning and exam are vital to your oral health. Your dentist will not only thoroughly clean your teeth, but s/he will also examine your mouth for early signs of concern before your oral health is compromised.

I just had my first appointment at Green Dental and I couldn't be happier with their service. I tend to be nervous when going to the dentist, but all of the staff were very welcoming and nice. The exam chair massages your back as you're getting your cleaning and there's a television on the ceiling to distract you from dental work. The cleaning and evaluation was very gentle. Thanks, Green Dental!

Top shelf dental care. Convenient location via METRO/King Street Station. Patient's dental chair features back massage capability along with TV viewing (CNN). Dr. Hye Park is very smooth. Dental experience beyond compare. I actually enjoy going to the dentist now.

Once again, even the cleaning was uneventful. Love being able to look outside while I'm in the chair. Dr. Park has the most gentle & tiny hands ! Love this place and the staff.
