Your dentist encourages you to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and at every visit s/he asks whether or not you are flossing daily (although one look inside your mouth will answer that question). However, does your dentist ever ask you if you use mouthwash? Most likely, not, which leaves you questioning whether or not mouthwash is necessary.
The truth is, mouthwash is not considered to be a necessary component of your oral health routine – if your mouth is healthy. For people who have healthy teeth and gums, who practice good oral health care habits at home, and who visit the dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups they are doing enough to keep their mouths as healthy as possible. However, many people are simply more prone to developing cavities and gum disease through genetics, dietary choices, medications, and less than stellar oral hygiene – and it is these who can benefit the most from rinsing with mouthwash on a regular basis.
Mouthwash that carries the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval has been proven effective at fighting cavities and lowering the risk for gum disease. Mouthwash that has antibacterial ingredients can help kill cavity-causing bacteria within the mouth. There are millions of bacteria present inside the mouth on any given day, but regular brushing and flossing help to extract them from your teeth and gums. However, if you are not flossing and brushing enough, rinsing with a mouthwash can help kill bacteria before they overrun your mouth. This is not to suggest that mouthwash is to replace necessary brushing and flossing, but it is to say that mouthwash can be a necessary component for those who are more prone to oral health issues.
